Dana TM4 is a joint venture between Dana Incorporated and Hydro-Québec. The company designs and manufactures low- and high-voltage electric motors, power electronics, and control systems suitable for the automotive, commercial, off-highway, rail, motorsports, and recreational vehicle markets. Dana TM4 contributes the highest possible energy conversion efficiencies through its expertise in permanent magnet synchronous technology, and other key e-mobility components.

In-wheel motor R&D
Start of design work on an innovative compact motor system that uses a brushless external rotor configuration with permanent magnet, a generator, and advanced power electronic controls that can be embedded inside a regular-size wheel at Hydro-Quebec’s IREQ.

Microelectronics business started
SME starts the production of its own DCB power module.
1991 TM4
First wheel motor prototype
Development of the 4-wheel motor system and its control software.

Test vehicle equipped with 4-wheel motor system
A vehicle is driven and controlled by the 4-wheel motor system.

TM4 foundation
Technologies M4 Inc. (TM4) foundation. 1998 also marks the development of TM4’s first PM generator system (10 kW).

Electric motor production starts
SME starts the production of its own designed AC electric motor for the forklift market.

Chinese JV (PEPS) founded
TM4 and Prestolite Electric Beijing Limited (PEBL) entered into an agreement for the creation of a Sino-Foreign equity joint venture company named Prestolite E-Propulsion Systems (Beijing) Limited (PEPS).

TM4 SUMO systems launched
Launch of the TM4 SUMOTM HD series, targeting primarily the heavy-duty truck and bus market.

SME acquires Schwarzmüller Inverter
SME acquires Schwarzmüller Inverter, a company with 25 years of experience in inverters for low voltage AC-motors ranging from 24V to 120V, 60A – 1000A.
2017 Ashwoods
Commercialization of IPM motors
Since 2015, Ashwoods had been working on the development of power-dense IPM motors. 2017 marks the commercialization of this series.
2018 TM4
10,000 SUMO systems sold in buses and trucks
TM4 reached a major milestone with the production of its 10,000th TM4 SUMO™ electric powertrain for buses and commercial vehicles.
2018 TM4
TM4 is acquired by Dana Incorporated
Dana Incorporated (NYSE: DAN) and Hydro-Québec announce a joint-venture partnership in which TM4 Inc., a subsidiary of Hydro-Québec, become Dana’s source for electric motors, power inverters, and control systems. As part of this agreement, Dana become a majority shareholder of TM4 in exchange for CA$165 million (approximately US$127 million). Hydro-Québec maintain a 45 percent interest in TM4.

As part of the Oerlikon Drive System acquisition, Dana gains stakes in Ashwoods Electric Motors.
2019 TM4
TM4, SME, and PEPS becomes Dana TM4
On July 19th, 2019, Hydro-Québec announced that the company has invested $85 million to secure the growth of TM4, now called Dana TM4. Dana TM4 now holds 100% of Chinese company Dana Electric Motor Co. Ltd , formerly called Prestolite E-Propulsion Systems (PEPS), in which Dana TM4 previously held a 50% interest. Dana TM4 now also integrate SME. SME low-voltage systems are a perfect complement to the Dana TM4 high-voltage product line.

Dana Incorporated completes the acquisition of SME Group, headquartered in Arzignano, Italy.

Ashwoods Electric Motors becomes Dana TM4
Dana TM4 now also integrate Ashwoods Electric Motors. Their low-voltage IPM motors are a perfect complement to the Dana TM4 current product line.

Dana TM4 to establish plant in India
Dana announced plans for a 4,600 square-meter (50,000 square-foot) facility in Pune, India, that will produce Dana TM4™ low- to high-voltage electric motors, inverters, and vehicle control units.
2021 TM4
Dana TM4 to establish new electrodynamics facility in Åmål, Sweden
Dana TM4 will establish a new manufacturing facility in Åmål, Sweden that will initially produce electric motors for the mobility industry. This $50 million fully sustainable operation has received $10.7 million in support from the Swedish business development community.
